New Music Video. Shortstraw – The Less We’re Together.

We’ve all wished at some point or another that we could take a baseball bat or
crowbar to our laptops, our microwaves, someone else’s car or our mother-in- law’s
wedding gift. Now we can vicariously live through the latest music video
conceptualised and directed by Yolande Botha.

The video is for Joburg Indie Rock band Shortstraw’s latest track: “The Less We’re
Together” – a high energy, punk rock anthem of sorts. It forms part of the band’s 12-
month project, Those Meddling Kids, where instead of releasing one whole album,
the band releases one track a month and with it a video. When Yolande heard about
the project on Nick Hamman’s show on 5FM, she got in touch.

“For me, a music video is more about bringing to life the emotions in
a song than the lyrics necessarily. This track, for me, has a lot of anger, sarcasm and
frustration in it – even though, lyrically, it is about all those annoying things you miss
about someone after a break-up. I couldn’t think of a better way to get rid of those
feelings…” – Yolande

The video follows three highly emotional characters who go to a very different kind of
therapy: smashing vases, radios, sinks and other breakables into smithereens. But
true to form, in one of her favourite genres: dark comedy, Yolande illustrates just
what could go wrong if a therapist of this kind shows a little too much interest in his
female patients.
