Eyethu Skate Park Crew need your help to create the first-ever community driven, designed and owned Skate Park in Cape Town! The park is for three diverse communities that live in the area, one of which is an informal settlement that has children struggling on daily basis for their general livelihoods.
This skate park will not only provide these kids with a safe space to skate/BMX and the likes but provide them with the opportunity to integrate and just be kids for a moment each day!
‘We are a community-led organisation that started in 2014 with the dream of a much-needed safe and recreational space for the youth of Hout Bay to skate on weekends and after school. Since the project’s inception, our organisation has grown with various volunteers – all with diverse professional skills – which has helped gain the project’s progress to date.
The Eyethu Skate Park’s benefits are twofold. Firstly, the project is a great precedent for other local communities to follow when driving and leading their own public spaces. We have set a tremendous example to the process of public and private partnerships, community ownership and public participation efforts. And most importantly, this community is creating its own crime prevention strategies through unconventional sports, youth leadership and after-school training programs.’
