Thebe Magugu’s latest collection, Geology SS17, was inspired by the idea of escapism. Here in South Africa, we are in a state of socio-political flux. Among all the beauty in the country, there are some very stressful and damaging events coming into light almost with each passing day and Thebe started imagining a woman taking to the great outdoors, to escape the pressures and noise of urban living. She takes time to recover by hiking, fishing, camping and, by pure virtue of those three acts, thinking, breathing and regrouping.
For the look book, Thebe took six brilliant models into a very remote part of Gauteng Province. Since the collection is a mixture of reds, oranges, plums and browns, he coloured each girls afro to match not only the collection but to compliment the skin tone of each girl as well. Photographed by AART VERRIPS and styled by BEE DIAMONDHEAD, the shoot features six girls playing uniquely African games, the type many people here played in their childhoods. Its particularly very personal to Thebe because he has fond memories playing these games with the girls in his street back home in Kimberley, in the Northern Cape. It points to not only the idea of innocence but to a time where there wasn’t corruption, ugliness and stress as we know it now.
