The work of Paul Ward has very evidently created a love/hate effect, but you cannot deny, no matter which side of that fence you sit on, that the guy knows how to get a crowd going. His latest ‘I AM’ series is a genius way of gaining ground in this rat race of popularity, he has created yet another element that people are either going to love or hate, either way they are going to talk about it.

I’ve been trying to find out why Kyle Brinkmann chose the name ‘Das Kapital’, but there doesn’t seem to be anything about it on the net. It seems incredibly pretentious. Think about what Marx stood for, and what he concerned himself with, and then think about Brinkmann manipulating his legacy into an uber-consumerist, self-obsessed, pseudo-rebellious middle class outpouring of hedonism and self-gratification. Kyle Brinkmann, think to yourself, honestly, about what you do each day, and what its ultimate aim is, and then juxtapose that with what Marx and Engles wrote about in Das Kapital. You’re cheapening their legacy, and at the same time preventing anybody who isn’t a teen wannabe rebel from taking you seriously.
It’s obvious that many people like what you do, and perhaps you have a serious future in this industry. But your name is awful, and really just immature. It betrays you for the kid you are (or were, when you started this thing). Change it.

How has the blog post been detrimental to your well being? Has it threatened your very existence or fiddled with your kids? Has it insulted your heritage or violated your human rights? The answer to all of these questions is NO. This is a photographer taking photos of a dj/producer. If you don’t like what you see, there is a fabulous little X on the top right corner of your browser page that will remove this content from your life forever. I’m pretty certain you have more important things to worry about in your life. Karl Marx does not need you to defend him, the poor kids don’t need you to protect them from the big bad poser kids and their silver butt spoons. And the world certainly doesn’t need you shitting all over some quality pictures of a dude who is quite phenomenal if you took the time to meet him. Guy I don’t really care about these pictures either way. I just saw them, and thought about the name Das Kapital, and explained what I think about it and the message it brings across. I’m not defending Karl Marx. I’m explaining why I think Das Kapital is an awful, immature name for a dj/producer. Part of the reason I think it’s bad is because it cheapens his legacy, but firstly that’s not the whole reason, and secondly that doesn’t constitute me defending Karl Marx. It constitutes me saying his name is awful partly because it demeans Marx.
Apart from that though, what you’re saying is bullshit. This post does not need to have negatively affected us personally for us to comment. The entire purpose of the comment function is for people to write what they think. It doesn’t say ‘compliments’ – it says comments. Therefore people are making comments about the subject matter – either Kyle Brinkmann or the whole culture of we-are-awesome. I assume you don’t have any problem with positive comments. Why then a problem with negative comments? Apart from anything else, if you exclude the possibility of there being negative comments, it makes positive comments worthless.
Brinkmann has very purposefully placed himself in the public domain. As such he needs to deal with public comment on what he does/what he represents.
We most certainly have freedom of speech and so negative or positive, comments are welcome. But, as the single parent who raised Kyle aka Das Kapital – I thought I’d provide some context. He has been working at his craft since he was 11 years old – using every waking hour that he was not at at school or involved in actvities to hone his craft. I, the mother, had to bust my own balls to build a life for me and my two children. A mansion in Fresnaye does not feature – nor for Kyle a Daddy who has there to fund a lavish life. His Dad has been out of the country since Kyle was about 10 years old. So…..you may filter what I have to say in whichever way you choose, but I have seldom seen someone as young dedicating so much time to honing his craft, building a positive reputation and building a career in a difficult industry. Careful of simply making assumptions on what you see on the surface = that is exactly what leads to most of the unnecessary conflicts within our world.

2. That juxtaposition you think I’m completely unaware of IS the reason why I chose the name. “Cheapening Karl Marx’s work” as such is entirely subjective. I have read and respect his works, and see no issue with what I’m doing as an artistic project. Ultimately, what I choose to call myself as a music producer is not what matters – it’s whether my music does it’s job, which so far it has.
As for it being immature, would you prefer something “mature” like my real name or an AOL screen name? The name, with its associations and the fact that people seldom understand it ADDS to the inspiration behind the project.
On that note, I’m done here. And I love the negative comment because I know that not everyone’s going to agree with me, and I like knowing where the disagreement stems from.
