I caught up with Nic Dinnie from Desmond and The Tutus, we discussed his new project ‘Alex & Her’, sources of expression and the South African Folk scene. Here is how it went…
What caused you to start a side project?
‘I have always had many projects running in conjunction with my role in DATT, I feel that the freedom to do side projects keeps one’s creative channels open!’
Where do you see Alex & Her going?
‘I would love to see Alex & Her progress into a serious Folk project, something timeless, where the songs are relateable and the music is just good!’
The songs you have released under Alex and Her are very different to that of The Tutus, is Alex & Her a means through which you produce the type of music you are really passionate about or is it complimentary to your role in The Tutus?
‘I think Alex & Her is just another channel for me to express myself, I fell in love with the new folk wave that hit England and America and started composing and have just really felt comfortable in the genre!’
I wish Nic well in all his projects, it’s great to see South African musicians being innovative and doing new things.
