The Followill boys have been on the top of any music related list I have constructed since ’03 when they released Youth and Young Manhood, which I still consider one of the greatest debut albums post ’00. Kings of Leon have evolved much since then, with four successful albums under their belt and a following far larger then they could have ever imagined. No one can deny that the Followill clan have been immensely successful but has this success come at a cost? Have Kings of Leon compromised musically for greater glory? Would they be this famous if the didn’t pack ‘Only by the Night’ full of pop-rock anthems?
It’s hard to tell but I have been worrying that never again will the true Kings of Leon sound be heard. I was encouraged the other day though, I saw a video that was labeled “Kings of Leon’s new, broad audience and the direction of their fifth album”. I watched the Interview and was left with great hope, Caleb admits that the style of ‘Only by the Night’ is very accessible to listeners, and he also promises that the fifth album will be more heavy and less serious. Hopefully this means more like the good old rock ‘n roll the Followills originally produced, with that edge of experience they have gained.
Here is the transition the Followills have experienced.
