2017 Calendar by Babez

Babez needs little introduction, she has been lighting up the streets of Cape Town and your computer screens with much vigour for a long time now.

‘Babez is a multidisciplinary artist interested in pop culture and the construction of femininity. While worshiping at the altar of Dolly Parton, she explores the disconnect between the origin of pop culture and personal identity production.’

Miss Debutante is the name for a body of work that includes a calendar and a set of prints for each corresponding month. This work, Babez Calendar 2017, explores the disconnect between the origin of pop culture and personal identity production and creates a kind of nostalgic nausea by reproducing existing tropes; the feminine ideal is duplicated to the point of parody. The calendar format reaffirms this duplication as it easily lends itself to reproduction. “Babez” is the persona the artist adopts to explore these characters. In Miss Debutante, Babez yearns for a past never lived.
